Today we did a pumpkin science experiment in class. First I talked about how when scientists conduct experiment they are usually trying to answer a question. The question we wanted to answer today was: "Will a pumpkin sink or float?" After we gathered our materials we made a hypothesis. We talked about how it doesn't really matter if your hypothesis is right or wrong but it is good to take a reasonable guess about what might happen. Most of the students in our class thought that the pumpkin would sink.
Then we went outside to conduct the experiment. We started with small pumpkins then tried larger ones. They were amazed to see that ALL of the pumpkins floated! I let them go a few at a time to push the pumpkins down tot the bottom and see if they would float back to the surface. They did every time!
Then we went back inside and recorded our observations. These recording sheets will be kept in their science folders at school.
