Literacy Centers

We have become more independent in literacy centers in the last few weeks. I took a few pictures to help explain the types of centers your child will be working in while I meet with guided reading groups.  As the year goes on the difficulty level in the centers will increase, but the basic idea will remain the same.

Poetry Center: Students get a chance to point to large poems written on posters. We have talked about how our pointer should match our voice. Don't go too fast or too slow. Each child will also illustrate their own copy of the poem each week. These will go in their poetry folders.

ABC center: Students explore the alphabet. Each week I feature an alphabet book and an activity that goes with it.  Later in the year we will be exploring words instead of letters.

Word Work Center: We have been painting our color words. We use a white crayon to write the word on white paper. Then we paint over the crayon with watercolors to reveal the color word. The students think this is magical! We focus on a different color word each week as we add them to our word wall.

Library Center: Each week we use props or puppets to retell a familiar story. We have been reading fairy tales. Sometimes there will be an additional activity for them to complete and take home.

Write the Room: Each week I hide 6 words in the room that begin with a certain letter. The students walk around the room with a clipboard to record the words they find. I encourage them to look on the word wall or in books if they would like to hunt for extra words.

Writing Center: Each week students will make a book using our new word wall word. They will keep these in their book bags at school. We will read the books in our book bags to our book buddies on Fridays.

Pocket Chart: Each week the pocket chart will feature our new word wall word. Students will read the pocket chart with a pointer. They are encouraged to make the pointer match their voice. Then they will record their thinking on a paper to share with you at home. They circle their new word wall word each week.

Listening Center: Students will listen to a story on tape. For several weeks they will be recording their favorite part. Later in the year they will record other story elements (characters, setting, main idea, etc.)
